The wardrobe in your head - and how to acquire it for real.

Omega's Picks: Igigi

When you take the time to get to know your body's shape, and think about the sorts of dresses that look good on you, that you enjoy wearing, it's easy to start to built a bit of a mental library that will tell you whether a dress you see online is likely to work for you.

I have in my head a catalogue of necklines, and sleeve types and lengths, waistlines and hemlines, and I use this mental catalogue to assess almost every dress I see..

Whenever the Igigi catalogue lands in my inbox I find myself looking at them thinking, "Hmm, that could work.. and that one, and that one... " The basic "block" they seem to be cutting and designing from ensures that I could easily spend a grand there at any given moment.

Here's my picks from their latest round of new releases. I would rock any one of these dresses - yep, even the yellow one.

What do the dresses in your mental catalogue look like?

Omega's Picks: Plus Size Coloured Denim

Omega's Picks: Plus Size Coloured Denim

The coloured jean trend is back with a vengeance at the moment - this is one that will carry you through spring as well. Pick your favourite colour and go! There's options in almost every colour of the rainbow, but just like everything else, you need to dig a bit deeper to find the right stuff in plus sizes. Here's some I have found in different shops.

What's your favourite colour?

Swatched: ckOne Eyeshadow Quad - Heat

Slick, trendy and ultramodern, it seems that ck one is bringing the same slick style to it's makeup range.

These eyeshadow quads are a case in point - they come in chic packaging with a swivel lid, and boast four trendy shades, two matte and two shimmer.

The colours though - well, if you look at these three pictures, the press picture, my shots of the tester palette and the swatches, you're going to wonder whether or not these three are the same product at all. They are, but this palette is VERY hard to photograph accurately, and how the colours look in the pan is very different to how they look on the skin.

The "green" looking one, for instance, swatches as a gorgeous shimmery antique gold colour, that didn't look very green to me at all once out of the pan.

The "pink", which looks more red in my photo, swatches as as a shimmery red, not too overpowering, a great way to get in to red eyeshadow if this is a colour you're not wearing yet.

The "gold" colour swatches as a rich camel tone, and the darker brown is rich and chocolatey. As matte eyeshadows these would be long lasting and great contouring colours.

I am really glad that I took the time to swatch these because they were quite the discovery! I love online shopping as much as the next geek but sometimes it's really worthwhile to get your hands on a product first hand before handing the cash over - this was definitely one of those times!

Hairstyle of Fun: Double Buns

Yes, indeed, this is unashamedly silly but so much fun! Instead of wearing one bun sausage, I wore two! I started with two high pigtails and then pinned on two buns..

The result? Fun, silly and just the thing for a weekend outing. It's hard not to smile when you make others smile..  this is the perfect antidote to a cold winters day :)

Swatched: Too Faced Beauty Balm

The highly anticipated Beauty Balm from Too Faced has hit the shelves at Kit Cosmetics, so of course I had to rush there and swatch it.

It's available here in three tones , "Vanilla Glow", "Nude Glow" and "Beach Glow"(there's a fourth colour that doesn't seem to have been released here called "Cream Glow" that seems to be a midpoint between Vanilla and Nude)

I swatched them on my pale pasty irish skin, and to my eye they all have a distinct yellow/orange tone to them. If you are looking for a sun-kissed look, or you are tanned, these would suit your skin tone well I think.

I prefer a more cadaverous look so I am not sure that these would suit me, but I'd have to actually put the light one on my face and let it "calm down" and see how the tone looks then - I have bought BB creams in the past that looked like they weren't going to work when I first tried them and then blended beautifully, so it's possible this is one of those.
Swatched: Vanilla Glow, Nude Glow, Beach Glow

They look to give a medium level of coverage, more like a foundation than a tinted moisturiser.

I am  a big fan of Too Faced's eyeshadows (the smoky eye palette is definitely one of my most-used items in the bathroom), it's interesting to check out some of their other products.

Swatched: Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Lip Crayons

Here's something cheap, cheerful and awesome. If you're into glosses and sheer colours, you'll want to pick these up - you'll only have to plonk down $15 to get all three of them. Face Of Australia are really getting a name for putting out high quality items that really impress for their low price tag - this is just another example.
They come in a set of three:

  • Cupcake - pink
  • Sundae - brown
  • Macaron - red
Can you guess which one is my favourite? Wouldn't be too hard, would it - it is indeed the red toned Macaron shade.

Swatches L to R: Cupcake, Sundae, Macaron
I normally go for brighter more opaque colours but sometimes I want to go all out with my eye shadow and don't want my lipstick competing - this is when I prefer a sheer or less bright colour.

These seem to be quite moisturising too and appear quite long-lasting.

Very happy with these, if you're a gloss lover you definitely don't want to miss out on grabbing these.

An encounter with a Lipstick Queen

I think it would be almost impossible to grow up as a young woman in Australia in the 80s and 90s and not know the name Poppy King.

I have raved about my adoration of Poppy's lipsticks before here on the blog. , so it should be no surprise that when we were given the opportunity to meet the Lipstick Queen herself - well, there was a bit of excitement here at Fashion Adjacent HQ, I can tell you. There might have even been some squealing.

I am delighted to report that meeting Her Royal Highness of Lipstick was every bit as exciting as we were hoping.  Here's what happened:

Spend some of Dermalogica's Cash on Mandela Day!

Today is Mandela Day, and to commemorate it superpower skincare brand Dermalogica are doing something cool..

Many of you have probably heard of the small-loans initiative run by Kiva - if you haven't, it's an amazing scheme where those of us with a few bucks to spare can CHANGE SOMEONE'S LIFE by helping an entrepreneur in a developing country. You give a few bucks and Kiva loans it to someone to help with their business. 98% of the loans get paid back, and when they do, you can take your money back or reinvest it.

Most of these loans are a couple of hundred bucks in total - the sort of money you or I might spend on a big night out. By giving away small change you can contribute to one of these loans, and having done it myself in the past I can tell you it's a really satisfying way to spend $20 or $50.

This particular scheme though won't cost you a cent.

Demalogica is putting up the cash - all you have to do is tell them where to spend it. They have their own Kiva-powered program called and through it they're letting us choose where the money will go. The more hits they get, the more money they'll give. Simple!

Changing someone's life for free, is worth a click, right? Yes it is. Click here:

Here's Jane from Dermalogica explaining it all rather more eloquently than I have:

DO IT! And then comment and tell me you have, so I can tell you how awesome you are.

All that Glitters: FOTD Gold Edition

Here's a fun weekend look I put together - I used my Illamasqua Neutrals Palette for the eyes on this one, they have an incredible antique gold colour called "Vintage" that's impossible to resist. Combined with the perfect cream (Stealth), the perfect brown (Wolf) and the perfect smokey charcoal (Obsidian) this is a palette that really does most of the work for you.

I used the gold on my lid, cream under my brow and shaded a bit with the brown colour - too easy! I also did a bit of a catseye/wingtip with my eyeliner, just because.

On my lips - Lime Crime Carousel Gloss in Golden Ticket. Because their colours are so OTT I dont get to wear my carousel glosses as often as I like but when I get the chance I really relish it.

With less wild lips you could easily wear a look like this to work.  Have you been getting into the golds?

Review: Bellabox July 2012

With the number of boxes available shrinking rapidly, it's quite the occasion when one shows up, so it was with eager anticipation I tore the wrapping off this one.

It seems Bellabox has followed the trend and abandoned the box!! We are presented with a small vanity bag that not all the samples will fit into.. For me the boxes these things used to arrive in are a lot more useful to me than my rapidly expanding small vanity bag collection.

That disappointment aside, we're presented with a large number of samples this month. Here's what we got:

- You, Me & Everybody Shady Lady Face Milk. Day moisturiser with sunscreen. Full size sample.
- Carmex moisture Plus Ultra Hydratig Lip Balm - full size sample. I'm just not a lip balm girl, no doubt this will be more exciting to others than it is to me.
- Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Deep Wrinkle Eye Cream - full size sample. Good brand, good product, full size - excellent.
- Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Night Renewal Cream. I like this brand - its hard to criticise a skincare range that smells like chocolate!, haven't tried this night cream though. A small sample tube.
- Ulta3 Nail Polish in Mulberry. These sell for $2 in the chemist bargain bin. Enough said.
- Almay get up and grow mascara. full size makeup sample always welcome!
- Primaria Nourishing Silk Mask & Bath of Life Shampoo. No matter how awesome these are it's unlikely I'd be convinced to buy based on these small sachet samples.
-Givenchy Pi Neo - sachet of men's fragrance "for your mr bb?!?" (thanks for the hetronomative jab there bb). Once again a sachet is not the ideal way to showcase anything.

So, there's certainly quantity, if not all of it is quality, certainly enough of it is to make this box well worth the purchase price. I will enjoy getting stuck into some of this over the next couple of weeks.

7 Great Plus Size Options for Work

I find one of the biggest challenges in my wardrobe is finding really smart stuff for work. It's much harder to find a nice suit than casual wear in my experience.

To find smart corporate wear that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, well, that's quite the find indeed.

I was very pleased indeed to find out that Macy's now ships to Australia, they have an extensive range of plus size stuff, including these corporate gems:

Omega's Picks: Plus Size Corporate

1. Elementz Plus Size Top, Short Sleeve Drape-Neck
2. Charter Club Plus Size Shirt, Three Quarter Sleeve Printed
3.Tahari by ASL Plus Size Suit, Collarless Single Button Zip Pocket Jacket & Skirt
4.Jones New York Collection Plus Size Dress, Sleeveless with Pleats
5.Spense Plus Size Dress, Cap Sleeve Ruffled Banded Waist
6 .AK Anne Klein Plus Size Jacket, One-Button Blazer
7.London Fog Plus Size Coat, Classic Belted Trench Coat

I'm going to be keeping an eye on them from now on. You can click through for a closer look at any of these, and if you decide to treat yourself, they will send us a couple of dollars.

FOTD: Browns and Blues

Here's a combination you don't often see, but one I quite like for a bit of a change - a combination of brown and blue eyeshadow.

I went with quite a dark cobalt tone at my inner eye (from the Australis Intensifeye "True Blue" palette), and put some as bottom eyeliner as well. I blended it out across the crease of my eye and then let the brown (from the Too Faced Smoky Eye Palette) dominate most of my eyelid.

The sparkly flecks you can see on my eyeline are a gorgeous liquid eyeliner from Stila - this  one is black with holographic glitter in it and is called "galaxy". It catches the light a little bit and adds a nice element of interest.

Lipstick Queen's "Butterfly Ball" was the perfect accompaniment to this eye look, a nude/neutral brown with just a slight iridescent shimmer to it.

Sometimes it's fun just to play with colour and see what emerges. This is a combination I'll wear again!

From LookBook to StreetLook: Celapiu and City Chic

Here's a double whammy for you! I recently got a very silly, very lovely, very warm scarf all the way from Poland via the wonders of Etsy - the store is called Celapiu and they sell Foxes - not real fur ones but utterly delightful felt and woollen Faux Foxes.

I managed to get my hands on a black one. I have called him Faulkes - Faulkes the Faux Fox! He delights small children and makes old ladies shake their heads in disapproval at my whimsy, so obviously he's an excellent fashion choice.

Apart from being rather delightfully silly, he's also very very warm - he's made with a very thick pure wool in a very dense knit, I have actually managed to get a bit of a heat rash from wearing him indoors - in the middle of winter that is quite the recommendation!!

Above you can see the "lookbook" version. Of course I'd never wear mine with pink! I instead paired it with one of my recent sale buys from City Chic, a little something I picked up to try and widen the colour scheme I usually go for. Bronze isn't much of a leap, to be sure, but it is something different from the black, red and grey that make up the vast majority of my wardrobe.

In City Chic's lookbook they paired it with a gorgeous cobalt skirt. I really like this blue colour, who knows, maybe I'll even branch into that sometime soon.

For now though, I stuck with my usual scheme - Red Jeans (also from City Chic), ankle boots. A comfy and fun outfit for a weekend outing.

Have a look and let me know what you think? Sublime or Ridiculous?

Makeup Tutorial - Green Smokey Eyes - Mermaid Eyes

When you choose to dye your hair bright red, small children sometimes shout out "ARIEL!!" as you walk by, and ask you what it's like to be a mermaid.. sometimes I like to run with the theme and wear blue and green makeup.

Blue and Green are colours that many shy away from, but there are ways to wear these bold tones without looking clownish. The key is to keep the bright colours low on your eyelid.

I have created a makeup tutorial so you can see one of the ways I like to wear green and blue together. I hope you enjoy it and that it inspires you to try some bright tones yourself!

Here's a list of the products I used:
