Aussie Curves: Strapless

This week's theme? Strapless. With a bustline like mine, strapless just isn't an option - I need  infrastructure! I have never found a strapless bra that is both effective and not agonisingly painful to wear after a few hours (if you think this is bunk, bra manufacturers, feel free to drop me an email!). Thus it is that the only strapless garments in my wardrobe is my extensive collection of corsetry. So.. let's talk corsets.
I have a couple of dozen that I've collected over the years. There's a lot of cheap "corsets" for sale at the moment, but most of them are really nasty quality  - even the ones that say they have metal bones buckle, sag and fold up, and they won't give you anywhere near the shape alterations that a quality corset will.

Take my advice - spend a little more and invest in something that will last you a decade of regular wear and still look good. Put a quality corset up against one of the cheap ones and the difference is very apparent indeed, both in longevity and how they look while worn.

My favourite corset maker is Gallery Serpentine - they're based in Sydney but send corsets everywhere, and I have had great success with their custom fitted corsets over the years.

The one I am wearing here is their Long Line Femme Fatale, in red brocade, and it laces at both front and back, which gives you a lot of versatility and allows for some pretty extreme waist reduction if that's your thing.

There's a lot of scaremongering that goes about around corsets - most of it is complete bunk. If you're wearing them recreationally and the corset is well made you will do no harm whatsoever to yourself by donning a corset.  I see a tightly laced corset as a temporary form of body modification, it gives you an exaggerated femme silhouette - if you don't have an hourglass shape it will give you the illusion of one, and if you do have one it will make it all the more extreme.

I'm very glad that I live in an era where wearing one of these is a recreational choice, and not a societal expectation, I think it'd be lot less fun to wear if you didn't have the freedom not to. I don corsets for special nights out and I really love wearing them.

Do you own any corsets? Would you like to?

  1. I love your outfit this week Omega...all the layering of your skirts and your signature red. Beautiful!

I haven't worn a corset since my wedding day...I've never actually thought of wearing one for fun, just for infrastructure (lol).

  4. Wow - great outfit - love the skirts! I made my own corset using huge zip ties as boning, it's comfortable and supportive but I only wear it as part of a costume. As for the bra - they don't even make strapless up to my size :(

    1. I have made a corset with zip ties as bones too, they are one of the best whale-bone substitutes available I think.. mine was a set of 17th century stays. :)

  7. Gorgeous as ever! Quick question:Does someone help tie you into that corset or do you have the back pre laced and then do the front yourself?

    1. The backs are usually pre-laced - I've worn corsets for many many years so I am quite adept at putting them on by myself.. luckily though my partner has also become quite corset-adept and he also helps lace me in.. you can always get them laced tighter when someone competent lends a hand :)

  8. I love this outfit, LOVE it! I've never invested in a good proper corset as I'm not allowed to wear them, so the cheap ones are the ones that I tend to buy, but I wish I could have a whole collection of gorgeous proper corsets. Gallery Serpentine = AMAZING!
