Hunger Games Makeup: The Girl on Fire

Here's a look I put together after getting inspired by Katniss Everdeen,  "The Girl who was on fire"..

Going with red is always an easy choice for me, but this fiery look is cranking it up a notch!

I put a lemon coloured eyeshadow at the inner corner of my eyes, and then a brighter yellow, orange on my lids and two shades of red in stripes upwards towards my brow.

I painted on some flames with eyeliner and filled these in with orange and yellow, angling these so they acted as a cat's eye.

I also did a yellow/orange/red gradient on my lips as well.

Playing around with gradients is always lots of fun, I really enjoy doing these sorts of looks when I have time to. It's not something I would take to the office but is lots of fun for a night out.

What do you think? Fancy a little fire in your look?

How to wear flat shoes and still look edgy..studded flats

Trend Alert: Studded Flats

1. Sam Edleman Flat Heels   2. Giuseppe Zanotti leather flat  3.Unif Loafer Shoes
4. Vince Camato Tui   5.Vince Camato Ballet Flat  6. Steve Madden Slip on Shoes

If you're like me, the thought of wearing high heeled shoes that hurt your feet and make you feel miserable after a while seems a little silly. I'm not sure why people say "beauty is pain" in response to this, or how we've gotten to a point where we think being in pain for the sake of fashion is okay.. I am just not interested in buying into that.

It means I will never totter around town in a pair of sky high stilettos, but that's okay. I want to be able to walk and run and jump and dance, and I don't want to be thinking about my sore feet instead of enjoying the party!

Most of the time, I wear flats - or close-to-flats. I still want to look cool though - and this hot trend is one way to make that happen. Studded shoes are all over the place at the moment, I love the combination of the demure, modest flat shoe with the edgy zing of studs..

Video Tutorial: Bronze Smoky Eyes

Time for another video tutorial!

Metallic looks are everywhere at the moment, and unlike many "hot trends" in makeup they're really, really wearable. As long as you don't go wild with glitter you can wear this to the office or anywhere!

Here's the products I used:

This is a very simple look to put together, it's a good way to look like you made some effort without going to much effort at all. Here's the video tutorial (your nice comments, "likes" and youtube channel subscriptions are very much appreciated!)

Omega's Picks: Plus Size Luxe

We've all done it - looked at some glorious designer creation and thought "Well, even if I could afford it, they'd never make that in my size..." Often that is true, and even these are only made up to a size 20.. but that is big enough for me, so here they are.

Half a dozen utterly gorgeous, no expense spared designer party dresses. If you're feeling like a splurge, or if you just want to see them from all angles, click through to see all the details.

Plus Size Luxe

I could see myself dancing the night away in any of these, if my lucky numbers come up I might just have to make them mine.

Swatched: Illamasqua Lipsticks Liable and Eurydice

New Illamasqua products always make me smile.. a second wave of gorgeous things from the Human Fundamentalism collection have been released..  including these gorgeous lipsticks, which I rushed into the Myer counter to swatch.

Eurydice is a hot HOT pink.. as soon as I saw it I knew Katy would LOVE it. It's difficult to find a pink this bright that doesn't lurch into fuchsia but I think they might have managed it with this one.

Of course the one I am REALLY excited about is called Liable, and it is a light orange red. It's a high voltage colour that's a lighter, brighter shade than my other favourite Illamasqua red, "Box", this is more of an orange base than the blue base of Box.

These swatches are of only a couple of swipes, I know you could build up a fantastic opaque colour with either of these. They look to be the same high quality as the rest of the Illamasqua range.

It is totally gorgeous and one day soon, I hope it's mine.

So, another big week here on Fashion Adjacent - here's what we've been up to!

Review: Lust Have it sample box May 2012

So if you have been paying attention, you might be saying right about now.. "Wait a minute? Hasn't Omega already reviewed the May LHI Box?"

And indeed I did, not so long ago. Apparently the merge with Glossybox hasn't been flawless, and as an existing LHI subscriber I have wound up with two packages this month.

Can you tell I am really, really upset? I'm totally not grinning and clapping my hands at getting a double helping, oh heavens no.

So - this is the box for existing LHI subscribers, as opposed to the "Glossy Box" special I already got. So what's in it?

Wardrobe Solutions - Two ways to create shape

Here's two pretty ordinary work outfits I've worn recently, that have something cool in common.

Let's work left to right...

Mermaid Eyes: A review of Emani Mineral Shadows

This brand is a very welcome new discovery for me - they first caught my eye at Salon Melbourne, and I was lucky enough to receive a few samples from them.
It seems as though there's a million brands of mineral makeup on the market these days, each one claiming to be the best, most pure, original, ignore-all-others option, and they are a bit of a mixed bag, I've found. Some mineral pigments seem to really have the "WOW" factor and others are more of a yawnfest.

These ones, I am pleased to report, definitely fall into the "WOW!" category.

I used them to put together this look which I promptly dubbed "mermaid eyes" due to the lovely sea green tone it predominately had.

I also did individual swatches of the shadows as well..

Out and About: Nuffnang Fashionopolis

Not so long ago, I went to a fashion blogger event run by the advertising company Nuffnang. It was called Fashionopolis , and it did seem like the whole city turned out for it - the blogging part of it, anyway!

Many luminaries of the fashion blogging world were there, and many hopeful up-and-comers like me! So, what does one wear to such an event?

Smoky Berry Eyes Tutorial

Berry Eyes are all over the place at the moment - at the much touted Met Gala there were plenty of celebrities sporting the look and it was all over Fashion Week as well.

Lucky for us it's not a terribly difficult look to recreate - I've done a quick vlog of one way you can put it together.

Review: NYX Doll Eye Mascara

Like everything else from NYX, this is a budget item that packs a punch! Mascara really ought to be thrown away after a month or so, as it's one of the makeup items that is most prone to get what I like to call in highly scientific terms "Icky and Gross!". It makes sense then to save a bit of money on something you need to repurchase so often.

This represents good value - the big brush and formulation do give a heavy, voluminous look - if you want your mascara edging more towards the Tammy Baker side of things then this is the sort you will be looking for.

OOTD: Portmans, Op Shop Gold, with makeup to match

Here's a work outfit made up mostly of opshop finds, both the black dress and red coat I'm wearing here were both thrifted items. One of those really lucky finds that I've been happily wearing for years now - I really don't see a red wool trenchcoat going out of fashion any time soon..

The dress over the top is from Portmans - I can just wiggle into some of their size 18s, this one is a particularly pleasing cut with some nice drapery at the waist. I have someone comment on how nice it is almost every time I wear it - and as an added bonus it's really comfortable.

Keeping on theme with my op shop gold, I went with gold makeup too - a brown eyeshadow from Bloom called "Hudson River" - I can only assume the Hudson is like the Yarra if they are naming browns after it! Add a couple of golds from my trusty 88 palette and I have a really good everyday look. On my lips is a Mirenesse gloss in a dark berry colour, just for a momentary departure to my usual red lips.

Saturday Sweeup

Omega: Fashion Adjacent - From Work to Play with ModclothLinky Linky.. it's been a busy week here on Fashion Adjacent! here's what we've been up to.. we've been making our wardrobe work overtime and picking out cute new things, we've got glossy lips and wild circle lenses, lacquered nails and Raunchy Rosie skin... Check it out:

Review: BYS Limited Edition Neon Eye Shadow Palette

Here's five bucks well spent.. this is the BYS Limited Edition Neon Eyeshadow Palette  For such a cheap palette this packs a lot of punch!

The Neon trend is everywhere at the moment, and only getting bigger, and this is a great way to get into the trend without spending a lot of money.

These eyeshadows are quite chalky in texture.. if you attempt to blend them in they will fade out almost straight away - you can get a strong colour if you pat these on and leave them be. Their subtle tones make these very wearable though, you can go with just a hint of neon on your lids for daytime looks that won't stress anybody out.

If you see this, snap it up - this palette is limited so when it's gone, it's gone - it's five bucks you wont regret spending if you want to get into this look.

Review: Bellabox May 2012

The Bellabox has just arrived on my doorstep..

So, what's in it?

  • EmerginC Hydra Repair Capsules - these are meant to be applied before moisturiser for "smooth glowing skin" according to the blurb.
  • Eau Thermale Avene - Eluage Eye Contour Care, and Emulsion.. anti aging creams, one for eyes and one for the rest of your face. Teeny samples of luxe stuff!
  • Bobbi Brown Mini Mascara - Extreme Lengthening Mascara - I already have on e of these and it's really good, so it's cool to have another one. Mascara goes off so fast, I think perhaps it should always be sold in these little "sample sizes".. it'd be less wasteful!
  • Savior Faire Lipstick - A mini lipstick is just the cutest thing ever! I'm totally enchanted by it even though the colour is a rather dire hot pink! (straight to Katy with this one!)
  • Sebastian Professional Range - three small sachets of shampoo, conditioner and treatment.. there's enough here for a one-wash trial.
As usual, heavy on the skincare, but it's nice to see two makeup samples as well! I'm quite pleased with this, I can see myself getting use out of all of this.

Review: YSL 4 Colour Harmony for Eyes

I picked this up in a blog sale recently, it's a little slice of luxury in the form of a YSL "4 Colour Harmony for Eyes", or if you prefer "Ombres Quadrilumieres".

The one I got is in a colour combination called "Tawny"

It consists of a bright blue, a dark plum colour with gold sparkles, a dark golden brown with gold sparkles,  and an antique gold colour.

So, is this worth the luxe price tag?

Review: OPI Mothers Day "The Happy Couple" Set

Just in time for Mothers Day, OPI have released this cute set - "The Happy Couple". Consisting of a very pale nude pink called "Passion" and a bright pink with purple highlights called "Pompeii Purple", whether you want to go bold or subtle this set has you covered. Buying OPI in sets always saves some money and with this brand the quality is assured, so being able to get more colours for less is always worthwhile.

You might want to pick up one for mum and one for yourself as well!

Omega's Picks: From Work to Play with Modcloth

Omega: Fashion Adjacent - From Work to Play with Modcloth

Once again I am shopping the catalogue instead of doing damage to my credit card!
Here's four super cute dresses from modcloth that I think would be quite versatile. With a jacket they'd be very suitable for a creative office, and then blinged up a bit you could take them out on the town!
I really love the cute names they give to everything at modcloth, and the site design just has me sighing at how gorgeous it all is. Who can resist a "Cute and Astute" necklace or "Ignite the Night" dress - obviously alliteration is always a winner with me!
All of these are available up to a "3X" which is a Australian 22 (US 20, UK 22).
The shoes (oh the shoes) - neither of these are what I'd consider very practical but they are both very beautiful and would really make a statement. They're by amazing designer Alejandro Ingelmo (of course I'm now humming Lady Gaga).
Which is your favourite?

Avengers Inspired Fashion: The Hulk

So, like every other geek on the planet, I've recently seen the Avengers movie, and because my brain is wired that way I immediately started thinking about beauty and fashion styling based on the different characters.

Avengers Inspired: The Hulk

I decided to set myself the challenge of putting together gorgeous, elegant, fun plus size fashion and beauty inspiration boards using the Avengers as inspiration.

I started with The Hulk. He's certainly plus sized, also strong, loyal, brave and awesome.

The gorgeous green dress at the centrepiece of this is by Monif C - it looks as though it's currently sold out in this colour but there are a couple of other gorgeous options there.  Paired with some silly, fun sparkly peep toe shoes and purple fishnets, this is a showstopper of an outfit.

Review: Glamourflage Raunchy Rose Hand Cream

If you're fan of vintage stylings you may already be aware of the brand Glamourflage - they have embraced pin up gorgeousness wholeheartedly, and have a range of beauty products all adorned with beauties from a bygone era.

I love vintage pinups - I love that they seem to have a lot more diversity in the kinds of bodies that were considered attractive, so this range was bound to catch my eye.

I was lucky enough to be sent a tin of "Raunchy Rosie" handcream.

So, what did I think of it?

OOTD: Extra life from your wardrobe - Choosing Pieces that worth together.

I am fairly certain that I've showed every single item (apart from the vest) in outfits before, but perhaps not in this combination.

I think one of the keys to a really useful and successful wardrobe is to have a lot of pieces that go together in a lot of different ways.

You can put together something new every day with the same basic pieces once you get the combinations right. I very rarely repeat the exact same outfit head-to-foot but despite that I wear the same pieces over and over again.

I feel it's the ethical, responsible thing to do - to wear something until it's worn out.

This is my ASOS coat, a city chic blouse with cream ruffles down the front, a striped flared skirt and a red sweater vest for extra warmth.

Hilariously, it wasn't until I got to work and took the vest off I realised I had forgotten to wear a layer underneath the blouse and it's quite sheer.. preferring not to show off my underwear to the rest of the office I kept the vest on.. thankfully it was a cool day.

Wardrobe malfunction avoided! :)

Wish List: Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate

I've been getting into contouring lately, so products designed for this have been catching my eye more and more. If money were no object, I think this might be the pick of the bunch - it's the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate palette - it comes in two combos "Intensity One and Two", number two being darker in tone than number one.
At $100 this would be quite the investment, but I have myself convinced that seeing as it's such a highly pigmented product and would last such a long time, on a cost-per-wear basis it's really not that expensive.

As you would expect for this end of the market this is a beautifuly packaged product with a great formulation - the deep shade is totally matte and designed to give you natural shadows exactly where you want them, and the highlight adds glow and light to your skin.

As spotted in the wild
Ideally when you're doing contouring the fact that you're doing it at all should be invisible - when you've got it right it simply looks like your face is shaped naturally however you contoured it to look. With this product that's the effect you could achieve.

Sadly I don't think this will be mine any time soon, but it's definitely got a permanent place on my wishlist in the meantime..

Review: Lust Have It May 2012

The April box was dreadfully late so it seems before you know it there is another Lust Have It box on the doorstep. I say box, but they have once again decided to pack it in a cute cosmetics bag - pink this time.

There's a note assuring us existing subscribers that the merge with GlossyBox is going to be a good thing, and to allay fears they have put together a cracker of a box this time around.

What's inside?

Swatched: Gorgeous Cosmetics Lipsticks - Scarlet, Berry Intense, Bollywood and Rossi

Berry Intense
Bollywood
Gorgeous by name and Gorgeous by nature, here's some lovely lipsticks that I swatched recently.

Four reds, Berry Intense, Bollywood, Rossi and Scarlet - each one a lovely tone and slightly different from its neighbours.

Scarlet
The Gorgeous Cosmetics range seems designed with Makeup Artists in mind, with a very wide range of product that each have a distinct but subtle difference. If you want a lipstick, blush or eyeshadow just a touch darker, or just a touch lighter, or just a little cooler or warmer - they have one.

Rossi
It makes Gorgeous Cosmetics a rather formidable range, sometimes lots of choices can be intimidating, but luckily their staff is very friendly and helpful, so if you can articulate what you want they can point you in the right direction.

This is a range I definitely want to add to my collection sometime soon!
