OOTD: Boho Braids

The lovely lady who writes Fox in Flats likes to challenge her readers and fellow bloggers to various dares.. at the moment she is challenging us all to try wearing braids for a whole week...

Braids and plaits are all over the fashion runways at the moment, and unlike most of the other stuff you see up there this is one just about anyone can get into without too much cost or trouble at all.

Here's my bohemian take on the whole braid look. All I did with this was plait some front sections of my hair and then I pinned them up on my head.. like milkmaid braids but more of them. I pinned them messily on my head, letting flicks of hair fall out of the braid, keeping it all very loose and tousled. I teased my hair through the crown and then swept the rest over one shoulder and plaited that as well.

I think the way to wear plaits when you're no longer a schoolgirl is to keep them messy and modern.. it's a fun and easy way to wear your hair.. I recommend it!

The rest of my outfit was also boho inspired.. a long fishtail skirt. a batwing blouse with a lace insert at the back, the high neck of this blouse meant that I could wear this with my thermals underneath so that I didn't freeze to death in Melbourne's harsh winter!

I wore a feather trimmed ear cuff, and a beaded bracelet, and on my ankles, warm and comfy legwarmers with some rather silly pom-poms. I am totally breaking the fashion rule of "If you remembered it the first time around, you shouldn't participate in the revival" with these, but they're fun and warm.. and I've always been a bit of a rulebreaker.

I enjoyed soaking up what meagre sunshine Melbourne had to offer and had a nice lunch with my friends.. I think I'll be wearing braids more often!

Review: Lon Vitalite 24K Gold Yulan Oil Facial Mask

This came in the Lust Have it June box, along with a matching eye mask. Anything that says "24 K GOLD" on the packaging is bound to get my attention so I was immediately intrigued by this.

I really like using masks - in the ads people lounge about with cucumbers over their eyes while using these, I normally wander around the house scaring small children instead.

This is a really cooling and soothing mask, it would be perfect for a hot summers day. It tingles a bit when you put it on, but it's not an unpleasant sensation.

Significant digging around on the Internet didn't reveal to me what "Yulan Oil" is or where it comes from. There is a Yulan Magnolia tree but whether this oil comes from that, I couldn't tell you. It's also not listed in the ingredients (which are Glycerin, Azulene, Collogen amino acids, Hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide, Gold, Morus Alba extract, Carbomer, Proplyene glycol, Purified Water) - But the "Morus Alba" is a white mullberry extract, which is good for skin, along with Hyraluronic Acid which is recommended for all sorts of discolouration - it's not hard to see why this would work.

What I can tell you is that this mask has a really noticeable "lightening and brightening" effect. After using it my face looked a lot more even toned and "brighter". Small spots of discolouration had faded and overall it seemed my face was paler and clearer-looking. I was really pleased with the results of this, and will be making room for it in my routine from now on. At $12 a mask or so it's a lot cheaper than heading off to the day spa!

Makeup Looks: Apricot Smoky Eyes

Now here's a colour you don't see me in very often.. apricot! Heck, that's ALMOST pink!!

I was just playing around with colours in my Pro 88 palette and this is what I came up with. Not something I'd wear regularly but it was a pleasing colour combination, I like how fresh it looks. One to remember for Spring I think!

Be Inspired by Our Obsessions...

Recently we were invited to join an exclusive blogger network called "CurrentlyObsessed.Me" .. though it we're curating a list of things that catch our eye.

Some of it winds up on the blog in one form or another but a lot of it doesn't, so if you don't want to miss out on seeing the goodies, you should "Stalk" us there..

Just like the blog, all the clothes we post there will be available in a size 20 or above, and if we link any online retailers they will ship to Australia.

We're also on Pinterest if you're interested in that, you can find us here: http://pinterest.com/steampunkerie/fashion-adjacent/

Enjoy!

Wild Makeup Looks: Undead Wench

Recently I did a DJ gig for a club, the theme was a "Dark Medieval" theme.. so I put together this spooky look:

I hit my beloved Illamasqua collection hard for this look.. using Skin Base to create a perfectly pale complexion... I used Berber pigment for the eyes along with the gold Alchemy eye-liner. The black lipstick is also Illamasqua, they call this colour "Pristine".

I was happy with how this turned out, with a silk scarf on my head and a corseted gown I looked the part!

Shop the Sale: City Chic

If there's one store that I spend more money in than any other, it's City Chic.. perhaps it's the wide variety of their clothes, but there always seems to be something sitting on the rack that really speaks to my personal style.

I do try to show some restraint, however, because my funds are needed for boring things like rent and food.

One of my "BIG DREAMS" is to one day become a blogger for City Chic.. until that day I'll just have to admire them from afar.

Here's some picks from their latest range for you to enjoy. Some of these items are on sale, as an added bonus, too!  Any one of these would fit seamlessly into my wardrobe...

Sunday Swatch: Ellis Faas

Here's something gorgeous I am lusting after.. it's a brand of makeup created by Ellis Faas and bearing her name..

All the products come in bullet-shaped pens, they're really very beautiful.. they come with clips so you can string them all together like an ammo belt.

While there's plans to add some more vivid colours to the range from what I read on the 'net, at the moment all the colours in the range are drawn from the human body.. an interesting concept, and one that means there are several delicious blood reds to choose from.

I swatched two colours from the "Glazed Lips" range, L301 and L302, one is a deep red and the other is a lovely brown shade.. I'm really impressed with these.

At about $40-$50 a pop these are a luxe product, but well worth the splurge if my investigations are any indication. You can find these beauties at Mecca Cosmetica.

Review: Lust Have it June

The June Lust Have It sample box has arrived on the doorstep.. once again it's not a box but a vanity bag, this month it's purple... and what's inside?

Trend Alert: Plus Size Peplums

A hot trend I am liking at the moment are all the peplums that are popping up everwhere.. I think they're a great option for showing off curves.

Designers are putting them on dresses, tops, skirts, jackets and even playsuits so there's plenty of choices.. whether straight, curved or asymmetrical they're bound to make a statement.

Here's some of my favourite plus size picks that show off this trend from ASOS and Dorothy Perkins - Click through for a closer look or to snap up one of these beauties! All of these are available in plus sizes and ship to Australia.

Makeup Looks: The Midas Touch

Here's an everyday look with a little something special.. a hint of gold.

The gold eyeliner is called "Alchemy" and it's from the Precision Ink range by Illamasqua.  Like all of the "Precision Ink" range this is a high-impact product, and the felt tip means you can get the colour exactly where you want it (and nowhere you don't). When my Hunger-Games obsessed daughter saw this she said "Oooh! You could do a Cinna makeup tutorial!" - his makeup seems just a tad simplistic to do a tutorial again, but if you did want to do it this would be the perfect product.

The eyeshadow is from a great trio I scored in a sample box - It's Mirenesse's' "Pearl Crush Creaseless Shadows" and the colour is "Tahitian Pearls". It's a very wearable trio of a light cream, an antique bronze shade and a dark olive colour. I really love the dark bronze shade, I don't have another one like it and the metallic but not overly shiny tone of it is really appealing to me. The texture of these shadows is really nice, very creamy and the colours are great - I'm very impressed with these.

My lipstick is "Kate for Rimmel" in number 22.  A light tomato red I have raved about before. These lipsticks smell great and look great, and they are in regular rotation for me.

Omega's Picks: Plus Size Stripes

Model is wearing a dress similar to this Dorothy Perkins number
I know, I know, I can hear some of you. "Stripes?" you're saying... "Plus size stripes? Don't you know that plus sized people are NOT meant to wear stripes???"

And, yes, like you, I have heard that tired old trope trotted out many, many times.. and you know what I have to say to that?  BALDERDASH!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so if you cast your eyes to the right here, I think we can settle this one once and for all.

Stripes, especially horizontal ones, show off curves beautifully.. if you want to emphasise the curves of your figure, stripes are the way to do it.

Of course, wearing stripes if you're plus sized might make you stand out a bit, but some of us just weren't born to blend into the background... were we?

Here's some great options if you'd like to introduce some stripes into your wardrobe....

I freely admit it, this post is nothing but cruelty. I'm going to show you something gorgeous that you can't have..  unless you're in Germany.

If you ARE in Germany, well, drop me a message, because if you help me get my hands on these babies I will be your best friend, forever.. :)

I am talking about the much anticipated makeup collection that Dita Von Teese is releasing.

Wild Makeup Looks: Burlesque Queen

Here's a wild look I did when I DJ'd the Va Va Boombah Burlesque show here in melbourne. Va Va Boombah is Australian's only "Fat Burlesque" troupe, and I have to say they're amazing! Really enjoyed the show and was delighted to be a part of it.

Of course I had to go all out with my makeup for this so I put on my most ridiculous pair of huge false eyelashes and went all out with glittery eyeliner and bright colours. Of course I had to do a video tutorial so I could share it with all of you as well!

I was quite pleased with the results and got a lot of compliments on the night.

Here's a list of the products and tools I used:

OOTD: Winter is Coming (Part III)

Here I am layering up for another cold winters day, and having a play around with my new camera..

Cardigan: Femme Connection
Leggings are from lululemon, I can't resist them because they have an omega symbol on them :)
Red Flats are from Target (similar luxe version here)
Dress with sequin trim: Tempt

This is a really casual look, perfect for just lounging around.. the layers cut the wind and let you get out and about and enjoy a winters' day. I like the pops of colour and the different textures.

Two Solutions for Tangled Hair

My hair has just enough natural wave in it to knot. I often wake up with a horrible mess on my hands.. but in my family, I'm not the one who gets to be the guinea pig for detanglers, oh no..

You see my partner has amazing, gorgeous, breathtaking hair down past his waist. It's the kind of thing that makes men scoff and women swoon wherever he goes.. it also makes him the perfect person to test hair products on! Of course he likes having his hair brushed (who doesn't!) so it's a win win.

With the right detangler, you can go from horrible knots to lovely smooth hair without pain, and without breaking your hair off..

Here's two great detanglers I have got in sample boxes that I really liked.

First up, the luxe option at around $21 a bottle - Davroe "Hair Wellness" Tame lemon grass detangler. This has a lovely lemongrass scent that isn't too girly, which pleased my guinea pig, and worked quickly to sort out the knots. It also left the hair really shiny and soft.. it seemed to act as a smoothing and moisturising treatment as well as a detangler.

At the budget end of the scale coming in at around $9 a bottle is SunSilk's Co-creations Expert-Perfect Straight Detangling Mist. This comes in spray-top that delivers quite a lot of product with each pump, so if you've got short hair you'll want to use a light hand with this. It also does the job nicely, but it doesn't leave the hair feeling moisturised like the Davroe product.

If you are wanting to detangle, and then use other products to style, then I'd lean towards the Sunsilk product - it leaves the hair feeling dry and ready for something else. If you want a product that acts like a treatment as well for a smooth look, then the Davroe one is the way to go.

Either way you will conquer knots without drama with these helpers!

Review: Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow Quad in "Serene"

The good folk at Revlon were kind enough to send me a couple of their new REVLON Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad, Katy will let you know what she thought of hers in due course but I played around with this lovely combo of blues called "Serene".

There's a light yellow, and three grey/blue colours of various shades. I think this quad is well named because combined the colours do seem to give a rather calming effect, the colours blend together harmoniously and the resulting look is one of subtlety.
The back of the palette has an instructional diagram that tells you where to put each colour - a bit unusual in their placement as they suggest putting the lightest yellow colour on the outer corner of the eye, the light blue   under the brow and the darkest colour just in the crease.. I tried it and quite liked the combination, but normally I'd have put the lightest colour under my brow.
With a primer and a lot of blending and building-up I was able to get a reasonable colour payoff out of these, they are the sorts of pigments that go on gently though, you get a gentle wash of colour and need to work if you want more. These sorts of shadows are very forgiving, they're good for people who don't want dramatic colour payoff or strong pigments, and prefer something a bit more gentle.

I found a "behind the scenes" film which seemed to me a lot more interesting than the actual ad for the products... It's a nice reminder that even gorgeous movie stars need a lot of work to look the way they do in commercials - at least half of this video is scenes of Olivia getting retouched and worked on throughout the filming.. and the incredible lights they are using on her really enhance everything.

Imagine how you'd look if you had an army of stylists following your every move and a crew to shine flattering lights on your face? Be nice, wouldn't it.. :)

I found that with a primer in place these did seem quite long lasting.. they are not the type of shadows that go on strong and stay that way, they go on with subtlety and stay that way.

If you're looking for something highly forgiving, not challenging, that's very suitable for daywear, then these may be for you.

The products in this post were kindly provided for consideration. Our opinons, as always, remain our own.

Winter is Coming Part 2: Seriously, dudes, Winter is totally here.

Continuing my "Winter is Coming" series this week (it has well and truly arrived!)

Here I am all rugged up again, and once more squinting at the sun...

I'm wearing a black knitted beret that has gold flecks in the wool and an interesting cable knit design - this was thrifted and cost me no more than a couple of bucks.

I have my wool blend pashmina - one of the first winter things I bought when I moved to Melbourne, it has been a faithful servant ever since.. the subtle black and red floral print tones in with all my other red stuff but doesn't try to compete - I can wear this with other patterned things without it all getting too clashy.

Keeping it sitting where I want it is a Penannular brooch - these have been used since ancient times to fasten clothes and wraps.. the fact that it looks like an Omega symbol is just an added bonus. This one is made of copper wire, I got it from the Etsy Store Katsara Yarns (there's another one just like it for sale there now).

My trusty ASOS coat has seen me through many cold days now (the awesome thing about being opposite season to overseas retailers is that things in season for us are on sale - like jackets on ASOS right now)

On my hands, possum fur fingerless mittens bought back for me from New Zealand by the ever gorgeous Mr Apocalypse Equipped himself.

All these combined make a chilly morning considerably less chilly, thank heavens!

Swatched: New York City Ballet by OPI

It would be fair to imagine, with their huge range, that OPI already had nail polish available in every colour it is possible to have nailpolish, but they do keep finding new ones.. here's six more beauties!

From Look Book to Street Look: ChicStar

I have to admit straight up - I have a love/hate relationship with ChicStar. The idea of a collection that's getting created by the users is awesome. I love the voting on designs and the fact that they make (some) things in plus sizes.

That said, the manufacturing processes and the fabric choices they create the clothing in makes it rather a hit-and-miss affair. Sometimes what you get is totally gorgeous and a total steal for the money you've spent.. other times what you get is poorly made from cheap fabric and is a big disappointment.

The cheap prices and the cool designs keep me rolling the dice though, and I have got some pieces from there that I really love.

This is one of them. They call it a "Plus size Jacquard Long Coat".

If you've been around for the "Look Book to Street Look" series before, you will know how this works.

I'll show you how the label has styled their piece using their model and then I'll show you how I wear it.

Review: Innoxa Lovely Lips Lipstick in Waterlilly

I got this for the best price there is - for free! It was in a "gift with purchase" sample bag at Priceline. When I saw the colour I made my traditional "ewwww, pink!" face but I was keen to try one of Innoxa's lipsticks - they are a brand I have often admired but don't own very much of at all.
The promo shot is arty and cool, gorgeous flowers bleeding colour right into the lipsticks. I suspect the actual manufacturing process differs slightly from the picture... after all, this colour is called Waterlily and I think those flowers are peonies?  (Correct me if I'm wrong, horticulturist readers!) Ahem.

The packaging of this is quite nice, nothing particularly exciting going on here, but I do like that you can see the colour from the bottom of the tube (and for once, it's a very good match!)

The colour, once on, is actually a rather lovely and on-trend coral shade.. not a sickly pink at all. The picture below of the swatch on my wrist is a more accurate view than the shot on my lips.

Despite my anti-pink stance I found this a really nice lipstick, it is one of those "blend into the background" shades, very wearable for day to day stuff. The formulation feels nice on the lips and it's a good opaque shade without too much gloss or shimmer.

If you want to get into the coral trend without going super glossy, this might be an option for you.

OOTD: Winter is Coming (no, actually it's here.)

Some days there's nothing to do but rug up.. winter has sprung on us with a vengeance this year, with the temperature sitting at single digits overnight and through those cold mornings..

It's a good idea to rug up.. being relatively new to a city that actually HAS winters this is a skill that I am still learning, but I am getting there.

I have learned the hard way that any exposed skin is a bad idea.. woe betide the commuter who forgets her socks!

This is me all rugged up... I have my my mohair wool hat (picked it up from Myer years ago and still love it!), a woolen crocheted neck collar (on discount from Imagination) , my woolen coat (bought in St Kilda), thermals, leggings, thick socks and thick suede shoes (battered old favourites from Target)... pretty much I am as warm as a sheep, I think!

Look just about as grumpy as one too, squinting at the sun in this photo. Sometimes my daily shots don't turn out how I'd like.. like this one, I don't think it's very flattering. That makes me hesitant to share, but you know what? This is one of the ways I look. I'm not model perfect, and actually, I'm quite sure I don't want to be!

So here you have me, squinting and all, braving a cold morning. What are some of your tips and tricks for surviving Melbourne's coldest mornings?

Sunday Swatch: Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipstick in CanCan

I picked this up at Priceline in my last haul there and it has found a regular place in my lipstick rotation.. this is Australis' Colour Inject Mineral Lipstick in CanCan.

Whenever I hear "CanCan" I immediately think of the movie "Moulin Rouge" and the amazing cancan scene with all the multicoloured petticoats.. I don't think this decadent shade of berry lipstick would look out of place at all in the bohemian paradise of Montmarre, so it is well named!

These sorts of colours are really in right now, dark berry shades are perfect for winter, and flatter light and dark complexions alike.

The packaging on this is really pleasantly chunky - the tube is fat and has a nice weight to it - doesn't feel like a budget brand at all.

The colour payoff and long lasting colour is also really satisfying - for a lipstick that costs about $13 my expectations were modest, but this has really impressed me. I have plenty of far more expensive lipsticks that don't have the opaque colour burst OR the long lasting wearability that this one does.

If you'd like to celebrate the start of winter without busting your budget I recommend you make one of these yours - I am going to be acquiring more colours from this range just as soon as I can.
