Aussie Curves: Heels

Getting in early instead of late this week with the Aussie Curves theme of "Heels". I have to tell you, when I start thinking about high heeled shoes, I just get mad. I am angry that they're held up as the epitome of sexy feminine fashion, when the fact of the matter is - they hurt! They make it harder to run and jump and dance... they encourage women to totter about and bear the pain because "Fashion Hurts".

If both men and women wore high heeled shoes, then perhaps I'd be less ranty about it - but they don't, in most cases. Men's shoes, no matter how fashionable, must also be comfortable. Men simply refuse to buy shoes that are painful to wear. Women, on the other hand, have been sold down the river on this issue at some point.

I had someone tell me that if stilettos were painful to wear, what I ought to do is get botox injections into my toes, problem solved! Yeah, thanks, I'd rather not inject botulinum into myself, but that's just me.

I just flat refuse to do the high heel thing (See what I did there, flat, har har) . I refuse to wear shoes that cause me agony. I refuse. I will wear shoes that are cute, that I like, that are fashionable - that don't hurt me.

These are an excellent case in point - I got sent these magnificently comfortable shoes the other day.  They're cowboy-boot shaped wellingtons, and are quite possibly the most gorgeously spectacularly ugly shoes I have ever owned. I think they're beautiful - the offensive print, the bright colours, the unconventional design and material and above all, the comfort they afford. These are super comfy shoes that look cool too!

They were a little tight on my calves, but I fixed that by making slits in the back of them of an inch or so, now they sit perfectly. They offer really great ankle support and the rubber soles give you plenty of bounce when you're stomping around town.  If you fancy picking up a pair of these yourself, you can do so here.

As for the rest of my outfit - it's a Maroon peplum dress from City Chic. Oh so easy to throw on on my way out the door and always looks good, another excellent example of fashion and comfort coming together.

Aussie Curves: Pyjamas

So, the Aussie Curves theme this week is "Pyjamas" - and here's the thing... I just don't wear them. I have a couple of daggy tracky-dakk kinds of things that I shamble around the house in, but for sleeping, I prefer to be like Marilyn - when journalists asked her what she wore to bed, she smiled and said, "Chanel No. 5".. I prefer Illamasqua's "Freak" but you get the general idea.

I think what this challenge was really about though, is getting a glimpse of us all when we're not all glammed up. At home. Relaxed. So here I am in my comfy robe (it's a mens robe from Target), no makeup, hair not brushed.. these were taken before six am on a public holiday.

Why, oh why was I awake at such an unpleasant hour? Well, there's a good reason... she's full of smiles and almost two, and she loves greeting the dawn!

One day, when I've got time, and energy, and a few hours alone with the sewing machine, I'm going to use some of the patterns I sell to make up some far more lovely and glamorous sleepwear items. I probably won't sleep in them, but they'd be lovely to wear when lounging around the house.

Here's some of my favourites from the "Lingerie and Sleepwear" section:

Oh, and here's what my older daughter did to my bedroom wall as a lovely surprise  Red blossoms? How did she guess?

Review: Klorane Pomegranate Shampoo & Conditioner

I've been using Klorane's dry shampoo for years and love it, but I had never tried anything else from this brand until this parcel arrived on the doorstep.

It's hard for me to evaluate this product realistically  I think, because I have to tell you - the sight and scent (and taste) of pomegranates is one of my favourite things. Anything scented with or flavoured by pomegranates is going straight to my "MUST HAVE!!" list. I'd probably love it even if it wasn't really good - thankfully I don't have to make that compromise here.

There's more going on here than just a delicious scent. Like most really good shampoos this doesn't lather up with loads of suds - in the cheaper brands they put extra stuff in to make the shampoo do that, and sadly that extra stuff sometimes isn't that great for your hair! This one has a low level of suds due to a lack of those additives, but it certainly gets the job done. Combined with the conditioner this left my hair super shiny and bouncy - and smelling heavenly too!

I thought my hair looked great, and I even had other people comment on it - one person said it was amazing that I could keep the colour I do and yet my hair is still obviously in such great condition - I had the shine-inducing powers of this shampoo to thank for that compliment, I think!

If you love the smell of pomegranates, and like your locks shiny, then this might be a shampoo you want to try out for yourself.

Any other pomegranate fans here?

Aussie Curves: Maxi

Just sneaking in before the deadline for this week's Aussie Curves challenge - Maxi!

I've been flat strapped and just didn't get time to do a photo shoot, but I do have a lot of lovely maxi dresses and skirts, and thought I'd share some I have previously posted, along with some of my favourites available in the stores at the moment.
Of course most of them are red, but surely if you've been reading for a while now, you would have expected that.

There's something about the swishy comfort of a long skirt that's

really appealing - I also love the drama of a maxi dress.
In summer with sandals in a light cotton or chiffon, or in winter in wool with tights underneath, the maxi is really an item for all seasons and all occassions.

The maxi format can really show off a beautiful fabric and/or print to full advantage, there's just something about all those luxurious swathes of fabric.
Down below I have shown off some of my favourite maxi dresses for sale at the moment - from the bargain to the totally luxe.
As usual all are available in at least a size 20 and ship to Australia.

Designer to watch: Hey Fatty

If you've not heard of the fabulous "Hey Fatty" well, you're about to thank me.. they are a "found fashion" outlet here in Melbourne who specialise in plus sizes - if you're not in melbourne though, don't despair, because they post their finds everywhere!

The online store is always chock full of amazing retro and vintage finds, and they have sorted them by size with makes life easy. I think they have a really good "eye" for finding the treasure in what must be mountains of old clothes.

I have been lucky enough to be able to peruse their stock in person on a few occasions too, in addition to running their own plus size markets, they participate in other market events as well.

Their next market event is on the 5th of May - it will be a plus size vintage extravaganza, if you're in Melbourne (or can get to Melbourne) you totally won't want to miss it. I'm going to be there promoting both my plus size vintage pattern store, and my body positive personal stylist services.

I'm grateful to live in a town that has such a thriving community of fabulous fats doing amazing things, and the "Hey Fatty" store is a prime example of this.

Omega's Picks: Plus Size Leather

I got sent a pleather skirt from the amazing people at Harlow the other day, and I have to tell you, this thing has become an INSTANT favourite in my wardrobe. It reminded me how much I love leather and leather-looking things, and also how this is a fabric that plus size women are often warned against.

I feel the same way about that particular fashion "rule" as I do many others - namely that it's nothing but a load of bunk! I love my leather jackets, wet-look leggings and my new pleather skirt.

I'll show you some of the ways I've been wearing it very soon, in the meantime, here's a roundup of some great leather and leather-look finds - as usual all are available in at least a size 20 and all ship to Australia.

How about you? Do you love leather?

Review: Dove Pure Roll On Deodorant

I got sent this to review the other day, and while a deodorant isn't normally the sort of thing that would get me enthused, I really feel I ought to share this one with you. What's good about it isn't so much what it does, but what it doesn't do!

I love wearing perfume, and one of my pet peeves is when you want to wear your favourite scent, and do, but then find that the smell of your deodorant and hairspray and makeup etc are all competing with your perfume - even if others don't notice, I do - and I am the kind of hedonistic person who thinks that wearing perfume should be at least as much for my own pleasure as that of other people's!

This stuff is the solution to that problem - it's totally fragrance free, which means it does it's job in a nice quiet fashion and doesn't try to compete in the Olfactory Olympics with your fragrance of choice.

It seems to work just as well as any other deodorant  which makes sense because in formulation it's pretty much the same as every other one on the market, with Aluminium Chlorohydrate doing the heavy lifting in convincing your sweat glands to go on strike.

I am really pleased to have added this to my routine, it's a supermarket brand and readily available, so if you're ready to let your favourite fragrance shine on it's own merits, keep an eye out for it.

Wild Looks: Peacock Goth

Here's a quick look at a makeup I did quite some time ago.. a pretty classic goth makeup with a touch of peacock green..

A pale foundation, dark brows, a generous swathe of eyeliner with some pretentious eye art thrown in for good measure (I was going for a sort of sanskritesqe sort of thing) and I'm ready for a night amongst the darklings..

How to wear Ombre: Fatshion OOTD

This ensemble is bought to you by the powers of  Serendipity  At first glance this looks like a dress, but if you have a closer look, you'll notice that it is actually a top and a skirt.

Would you believe that they come from two different stores, bought years apart? It's true!

I have perfect colour pitch - in the same way that some people can identify and reproduce more distinict sounds than others, apparently there's a similar quality for sight - there are some people who can identify and retain colours better than other people. This is not really a very useful superpower to have, but once in a while it does come in handy!

The top of this outfit is a kaftan-style ombre dyed top from Target. I spotted it on the rack and immediatley thought it might match something I had sitting at home - the chiffon skirt I originally bought from crossroads, years ago.

I bought the top, took it home, dug up the skirt, and BINGO - perfect match! I really love the effect of a long ombre dress, the elongated lines of it appeal to me, and it feels quite bohemian!

In keeping with the general theme I usually put boho plaits in my hair and wear soft makeup colours with this. I also like to wear a piece of costume jewellery that I've had forever that is a metal tree branch adorned with ribbons.

I wouldn't be very interested in dressing like this every day but it's fun to play boho once in a while...
